Over the centuries, magazine publishing has experienced considerable development. Woman’s Era Magazine featured both educational and activist works, like Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin’s national conference of black women held in 1895 to protest letters criticizing black women as natural rapists or immoral. From this event grew the National Federation of Colored Women who continued supporting suffrage while writing articles in favor of it for publication within their magazine; these meetings met twice monthly to engage in civics, literature, public improvements or any topic that directly impacted black women.
